State of obex-data-server

November 24, 2007 on 4:59 am | In GNOME, obex-data-server | 14 Comments

For some time there hasn’t been any news on obex-data-server front, but that’s because I am busy with my studies. I really hope to make first public release of obex-data-server until next year. For that to happen I need to fix at least 3 bad bugs and create some website with documentation. Currently known bugs can be found at http://bugs.muiline.com (select “obex-data-server” from project list).

  1. Hi,

Good job, I made a dbus aware version of obexftp (command line application) but this is much better, as this doesn’t require to modify obexftp internals. (I added a custom transport implementation and all that stuff to obexftp to get it to work).

Today is my last day of university, from now on I have one free months, and we have lots of project to end at the company I’m working. I will use your code for sure, I hope I can test it and send you patches and suggestions if I see something could change or improve.

I started an Open Source project for proximity marketing ( http://code.google.com/p/proximitymarketing/ ) and one of my targets was too get a better implementation of obexftp, but with your new stuff I’m sure it will be even better.

Feel free to get in touch with me,

    Cheers from Argentina,
    Manuel

Just to be in touch, it’s better to work togheter in this cases.

    Cheers,
    Manu

  5. Hi, Tadas, The obex-data-server is great, thank you!
In my application, I found two problems with obex-data-server: The ods-session-test.py will dead there without any response if Nokia 5700 simply refuses receiving files from ftp or opp session, neither error message or exception showed up so I could not handle the error. The second problem is that obex-data-server and opp service sometimes could totally disappear, I have to restart the python script to get the opp service back. I have tried hard to find out the reason but without any progrss. This is a problem too hard for me anyway. Can you help me? or you can tell me how to catch the useful information for debugging?
    I only know python programming.
Thank you again and hope you a happy 2008.

  6. To debug obex-data-server, run it manually (from command line). It will output some useful info. Try to reproduce both bugs you described and post the output of ods to http://bugs.muiline.com (file a bug report on “obex-data-server” project). The first bug is probably caused by your Nokia incorrect behaviour while the second understand I do not (needinfo) :D
    Thanks for your cooperation.

  10. Hi,

I am building POKY for OMAP 3430. I was able to bring up the system on the board, but I am not able to receive and send files even if I included obexftp. It says “Bluetooth OBEX server failed: The name org.openobex was not provided by any .service files”.

Then I included obex-data-server to my build. Build was successful but the poky hanged while loading the root file system.

Please give your inputs regarding obex-data-server.

    Thank you.

  11. Hi,
First you should ensure that you have a working DBus setup. Then you can test obex-data-server by using ods-server-test.py script in the test directory of obex-data-server source.

  12. Hi,

Does any package of obex-data-server support
    gnome-obex-server??

Can I receive files over bluetooth using obex-data-server?

    Thanks,
    Raghavendra

  13. Raghavendra, yes, that is possible, you need use “python test/ods-server-test.py opp /tmp”
and you can receive files using ODS, but i want to use this with bluetooth-applet, because it dones’t works with it…

  14. I am to a great extent impressed with the article I have just read. I wish the author of tadas.dailyda.com can continue to provide so much worthwhile information and unforgettable experience to tadas.dailyda.com readers. There is not much to state except the following universal truth: No matter how plain and clear your language, someone will impute hidden meaning and evil intent. I will be back.
